Trying to define exactly what it is about opals that are so magical isn’t easy, even for designers who’ve created covetable opal jewels. For me, at least, it’s the play of colour, the iridescence and dimension that draws you in, and the idea that within the depths of an opal there’s another world of silica spheres that interact with light in their own special ways. Here, I am pleased to share the views of five designers who I tasked with defining their love of opals and, of course, some of their fine jewellery creations that show these gems in their most striking light.
