Award-winning designer Fei Liu’s defining moment came in 2001 when he was named one of the Top Ten Finalists in the prestigious Basel Award at Baselworld, Switzerland — at the time, the world’s largest watch and jewellery exhibition.

Representing the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, Fei was selected from talented students across more than 60 jewellery design schools worldwide. Each finalist was tasked with creating a piece inspired by the theme “Surreal Appeal” and had the opportunity to collaborate with a leading jewellery house to bring their designs to life. Fei worked closely with the renowned Italian jewellery house Chimento to craft his creation, marking an exciting milestone in his career.

Fei’s selection as a finalist not only marked a key turning point early in his journey but also helped define his signature design style: a seamless blend of Eastern heritage and Western innovation, resulting in a sculptural, emotionally resonant aesthetic. His conceptual approach and unwavering dedication to craftsmanship caught the attention of industry leaders and the international press.

The finalists’ creations were showcased at Baselworld before being auctioned at Christie’s, with all proceeds benefitting cancer research through the Garland for Linda Foundation, founded by Sir Paul McCartney in memory of his late wife, Linda McCartney. This fusion of creativity and charitable purpose has remained at the heart of Fei Liu Fine Jewellery.

Reflecting on this formative experience, Fei shares:

“Being recognised at the Basel Award gave me a platform and the confidence to pursue bold ideas. It reminded me that jewellery is not only about adornment — it can be meaningful, purposeful, and deeply human.”

Since then, Fei Liu’s career has flourished. From launching Fei Liu Fine Jewellery in 2006 to receiving multiple international accolades, his commitment to beauty, storytelling, and innovation continues to shape the brand’s collections.

The 2001 Basel Award was just the beginning — a pivotal first chapter in an ongoing journey, one told through precious metals, gemstones, and the enduring power of design.
