Over the past few years, few subjects have generated more discussion within the jewellery industry than lab-grown diamonds.
Clients often ask us the same questions:
- Are they real diamonds?
- Why are they less expensive?
- Are they more sustainable?
- Will they replace natural diamonds?
As an independent jewellery designer brand, we believe these conversations are valuable. Rather than viewing lab-grown and natural diamonds as opponents, we see them as different materials that serve different purposes. Each has its place within contemporary jewellery.
What Exactly Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A laboratory-grown diamond is a real diamond.
It possesses the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as a mined diamond. The difference lies in its origin. While natural diamonds formed deep within the earth over billions of years, lab-grown diamonds are created in highly controlled laboratory environments.
The result is a gemstone with the same brilliance, durability, and beauty that people have admired for generations.
Why We Chose to Work with Lab-Grown Diamonds
For many years, our collections focused almost exclusively on natural gemstones.
We have long celebrated the individuality of sapphires, tanzanites, spinels, pearls, opals and countless other natural treasures. These materials continue to inspire much of our work today.
However, as laboratory-grown diamonds evolved in quality and consistency, we began to see exciting creative possibilities. This was particularly true when designing collections that could offer exceptional craftsmanship at a more accessible price point.
Our approach has never been driven by trends alone. Design remains at the heart of every collection.
As Fei explains:
“Nature offers us boundless inspiration, and the honeycomb is a perfect example of beauty and efficiency in design. With Rayon de Miel, we aim to capture that essence, creating jewellery that is both timeless and contemporary.”
This philosophy guided the creation of our Rayon de Miel collection, where hexagon-cut lab-grown diamonds were chosen specifically for their ability to reflect the geometric beauty of honeycomb structures.

Design Comes First
At Fei Liu Fine Jewellery, we have always believed that jewellery should tell a story.
Whether we are working with a rare natural sapphire, an exceptional spinel, a South Sea pearl, or a lab-grown diamond, the most important question remains the same:
Does the material help us realise the design?
A gemstone is only one part of a jewel’s value. Craftsmanship, artistic vision, proportion, wearability, and emotional connection matter just as much.
As Fei often says, jewellery is a vehicle for self-expression.
Why Natural Gemstones Remain Important to Us
While we embrace innovation, our love for natural gemstones remains unchanged.
Many of our most celebrated creations are centred around the unique characteristics of natural materials. No two sapphires are identical. Every opal displays its own play of colour. Each tanzanite possesses subtle variations in hue.
These differences are not imperfections. They are part of what makes natural gemstones so fascinating.
In recent years, we’ve actually seen growing interest in coloured gemstones as clients seek pieces that feel individual and personal. Rather than following convention, many collectors are choosing jewels that express their own taste and character.

The Future of Fine Jewellery
We believe the future of jewellery is not a choice between lab-grown and natural.
Instead, it is about offering thoughtful choices.
Some clients will choose a lab-grown diamond because they appreciate the value, accessibility, or environmental considerations.
Others will continue to seek natural diamonds and rare coloured gemstones because of their geological rarity and unique history.
Both decisions are valid.
What matters most is that the jewellery is beautifully designed, expertly crafted, and cherished for years to come.
As a house known for celebrating artistry, colour, and innovation, we are proud to work with both traditional and modern materials when they help us create exceptional jewellery.
After all, the true value of a piece is not just found in the stone itself, but in the story it carries and the person who wears it.
