We are delighted to share that our one-of-a-kind couture jewellery piece, Imperfection, achieved USD 44,450 at Christie’s New York Jewels Auction.

Presented alongside world-renowned maisons including Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and Graff, this result highlights the growing recognition of contemporary designer jewellery within the global fine jewellery market. It reflects the continued dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and modern couture jewellery design.

At Fei Liu Fine Jewellery, we specialise in creating distinctive, designer-led fine jewellery that combines innovation, craftsmanship, and artistic expression. Imperfection exemplifies this approach, offering a sculptural interpretation of high jewellery that sits confidently within today’s international auction landscape.

Couture Jewellery Design Inspired by Imperfection

Imperfection is a one-of-a-kind couture neckpiece designed to explore contrast, asymmetry, and individuality in fine jewellery design.

Created as a versatile piece, it can be worn both as a statement necklace and as a detachable brooch, allowing the wearer to transition between jewellery and sculptural art.

The design is crafted in platinum and formed into fluid, feather-like structures that gently contour the neckline. Rather than focusing on symmetry, the composition embraces organic irregularity, with each element positioned to create a natural sense of movement and flow.

This approach results in a contemporary couture jewellery piece that reflects the beauty of imperfection, where variation and contrast define the overall aesthetic.

Materials, Craftsmanship, and Detail

The neckpiece features a combination of black and white mother-of-pearl alongside diamond-set elements. These materials are carefully selected to interact with light in different ways — mother-of-pearl offering subtle iridescence, while diamonds provide brilliance and contrast.

At the centre of the composition sits a 50.25-carat elongated Edwardian aquamarine. Its soft blue tone creates a visual balance against the sculptural platinum forms, anchoring the design with a sense of calm and clarity.

Each component of the piece is individually crafted and assembled with precision. The complexity of the structure requires a high level of technical expertise, ensuring that the final piece maintains both durability and visual fluidity — key characteristics of fine couture jewellery.

The Concept Behind Imperfection Jewellery

The concept behind Imperfection explores how asymmetry, contrast, and variation can contribute to balance in jewellery design.

Initially envisioned in an all-white palette, the design evolved during development. The introduction of black mother-of-pearl was a deliberate decision to create contrast, enhancing both the visual impact and conceptual depth of the piece.

This shift reinforces an important principle in our design philosophy: that individuality and character often emerge through difference rather than uniformity. In this way, Imperfection reflects a broader approach to contemporary high jewellery — one that values expression, movement, and personal interpretation.

Fei Liu Fine Jewellery at Christie’s

The inclusion of Imperfection at Christie’s New York Jewels Auction places our work within a global context where contemporary designer jewellery is shown alongside established luxury maisons.

This recognition underscores the increasing visibility of independent fine jewellery designers within the international auction and collectors’ market. It also reflects a growing appreciation for unique, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that combine artistic vision with exceptional craftsmanship.

Designer Statement

Fei Liu comments:

“Imperfection was created to explore the quiet beauty found in asymmetry and contrast. The intention was to capture the natural movement of forms that do not mirror perfectly, and to allow materials and structure to interact in a way that feels alive. Seeing this piece presented at Christie’s alongside some of the world’s most established houses is incredibly meaningful. It reinforces that imperfection can be understood as a form of expression and individuality.”
